The Banwari were the first inhabitants of Trinidad. They arrived in small canoes from the Orinoco Delta of the South American mainland and settled in the Banwari Hills at the edge of the Oropouche Lagoon some seventy two hundred (7,200) years ago. They roamed the island freely, exploring and enjoying its natural splendour and beauty. Their nomadic instincts and navigational prowess led them all the way up the Caribbean island chain as far as Dominica.
